About Us

Neal Speer Construction

Neal started his construction business in 1972 under some unusual circumstances. At the time, he was working for a Swanton contractor who was remodeling a house in Swanton Village. During the 4th of July weekend, the contractor unexpectedly pulled up stakes and left town without telling anyone, not even Neal, who was shocked when his boss didn’t show up to work on Monday.

The homeowner wanted his house done, so he looked over at Neal and asked him if he wanted to finish the job. And so. Neal Speer Construction was born.

The company recently celebrated 43 years in business. Neal lives in Swanton Village and still works full-time. His wife, Marie has been an active participant as his bookkeeper for many years.

At the height of the construction boom in the mid 2000’s Neal had a crew of 4, along with several sub-contractors building new homes and taking on major and minor remodeling projects. As the building boom cooled down, Neal has cut back on his crew, and now focuses mainly on kitchen and bathroom remodeling as well as modest additions. He has built a solid reputation for remodeling and restoring old homes in the area.

The quality of his work has earned him several awards from the Vermont Homebuilders and Remodelers Association. In 1991 he earned 2nd place in Residential Whole House Renovations Over the years he as won three other “Better Homes Awards” in several categories, including a new single family home and a new and a remodeled kitchen. In 2012 Neal was honored by the association as “Builder of the Year”. A true testament to his craftsmanship is the fact that Neal has now retained some of the same customers for over 25 years.
